The people of Bamendakwe, Bamenda I Municipality, witnessed a historic moment as the long-awaited Nta’afi Proximity Stadium was officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute.
The ceremony, marked by excitement and optimism, signaled a new era for sports, youth development, and community life in the North West Region. The 342-seat facility, constructed under the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development (PPRD) with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is expected to host local competitions, nurture young talents, and revitalize economic and social activities in the municipality.
Mayor Mbingha Felix Calls for Bigger Investment in Sports
Speaking at the inauguration, the Mayor of Bamenda I Council, Mr. Mbingha Njah Felix, expressed gratitude for the project but appealed for a standard, fully-equipped stadium to be constructed in the North West Region.
“This proximity stadium is a welcome development,” the mayor said, “but the region needs a modern sports complex that can host major tournaments, attract investors, and give our youths a platform to compete at higher levels.”
Sports as a Tool for Peace and Unity
In his speech, Prime Minister Dion Ngute emphasized the government’s commitment to using sports as a tool for peace, reconciliation, and economic empowerment in regions affected by the crisis. He encouraged the youths of Bamenda I to take full ownership of the facility, develop their talents, and use sports as a unifying force.
